Covalent Bonds

Are covalent bonds only formed by two non-metals? Or can other types of elements be involved and its just more unlikely?

I think only two non-metals. A non-metal and a metal would form an ionic bond. Two metals would form a metallic bond.

Yes, I believe that covalent bonds are only between two nonmetals.

Yes, it's only between nonmetals. If other metals were involved, it would probably be a different type of bond.

What did Dr. Lavelle mean when he said non-metals do not form cation because their ionization energies are too high?

covalent bonds form when electrons are shared between two nonmetals. Nonmetals can however form different types of bonds depending on their partner atoms.

He meant that since their ionization energies are too high, meaning that a very large amount of energy is required to remove one of their valence electrons, they will not lose electrons to form cations. Instead, they will gain electrons since they have a high electron affinity, forming anions.

Yes, covalent bonds are only between two nonmetals! If you have a metal-nonmetal bond it's an ionic bond and a metal-metal is a metallic bond.

Only formed between two non-metals as they are the most likely to share electrons (covalently bond) between atoms to fill valence shell.

Covalent bonds form between nonmetals whereas ionic bonds are formed when electrons transfer from metal to nonmetal. This is because nonmetals don't form cations and therefore share electrons to form covalent bonds.
