Resonance

Postby 905416023 » Mon Oct 28, 2019 11:31 pm

For resonance structures, do they have to follow the octate rule? And if not, when?

Yes. The exceptions are the first 4 elements: H, He, Li, Be.

Resonance structures still do follow the octet rule because they are just different possible structures for the molecule. Either way, to be stable, most atoms do follow the octet rule.

Yes. Resonant structures are just different ways of drawing the same structure. These structures should still follow the octet rule when being drawn all of these different ways.

If a molecule's resonance structures can be drawn where the central atom has an expanded octet, this would be an exception to the octet rule. Another exception would be with Group 13 elements whose resonance structures might not even complete their octet and instead form compounds with 6 electrons.

Yes they do, except for the exceptions Lavelle talked in class. Remember that resonance structures have the same position of atoms, but just different arrangement of electrons and bonds.
