Creating Lewis Structures

Postby AronCainBayot2K » Sun Oct 27, 2019 5:22 pm

If we were to be given a compound such as ONF, how would we know which atom would be in the middle of the structure?

The atom that goes in the middle is the one with the lowest ionization energy; in this case it would be Nitrogen.

The atom in the middle is often the one with lowest ionization energy because the central atom shares more electrons, and an atom with higher ionization energy would be less likely to share more electrons.

You would put the atom that is the least electronegative or has the lowest ionization energy in the middle.

Typically, the element with the lowest ionization energy will go in the center.

The atom with the lowest ionization energy goes in the middle. Remember that ionization energy increases as you move up and right on the periodic table. Ionization energy is the minimum amount of energy required to remove the most loosely bound electron.

the middle one is the one that creates the most bonds, and also its normally always carbon if carbon is one of the elements. oxygen and sulfur are also typical centered.
