Dipole vs ionic bond

Postby Joseph Saba » Tue Oct 29, 2019 2:57 pm

Is the charge in an ionic bond supposed to be δ- and δ+? My TA wrote that Na bonded to Cl has a δ+ and δ- charge respectively on each atom, but I thought that notation was only to be used for a dipole covalent bond, not ionic bond. Aren't ionic bonds a definite positive number? Is either notation correct?

I believe you're right, since the partial charges are from covalent bonds and formal charges from elements within the compound.

Partial charges are for polar covalent bonds and dipole moments, so I believe your TA mixed it up.
