Electronegativity

Postby Kayla Maldonado 1C » Sun Nov 03, 2019 2:11 am

When drawing lewis structures will we be given the electronegativity table to determine which atom will be the central atom?

I doubt that we will be given the electronegativity table, I think we will just have to base it off of our knowledge of the general trend. Also, the electronegativity rule is not true 100% of the time, especially when the values are very close. We did an example in my discussion class and when we tried to base it off of electronegativity it gave us a Lewis structure that was incorrect. If you are unsure about the electronegativity (of if they are very close in value), it is probably better to check the formal charges of each element in both structures, to determine which structure is correct (the one with lower formal charges).

I asked in my discussion on Friday if we would be given an electronegativity table on our midterm because the periodic table he uses in our discussion has the atoms electronegativity on it and he said no. We will just have to remember the trends on the periodic table and apply it to the test.

What is the pattern on the periodic table that we're supposed to memorize for determining electronegativity?

Electronegativity increases as you move up and across the periodic table.

I doubt you'll be given a table of electronegativity values but you will most likely be given a periodic table so all you would need to know is the trend which is that electronegativity increases moving towards the top right corner.

It may be helpful to think about the number of bonds that an atom can form and use the atom that forms the most number of bonds at the center of the lewis structure.

It is also helpful to keep in mind that electronegativity increases as it gets closer to Flourine on the periodic table.

We will only be given the electronegativity table. We are expected to know the trends of the table.

fluorine is the most electronegative element; it may be helpful to remember that electronegativity increases as you go to the upper right of the periodic table.
