Strength of Bonds

Postby Drew Myers 4G » Sun Nov 03, 2019 11:33 am

Are longer bonds or shorter bonds stronger?

Longer bonds are less stronger than shorter bonds.

longer bonds are easier to break, so they are weaker. Shorter bonds are harder to break, so they are stronger.

Shorter bonds (double and triple) are characteristically stronger than longer bonds (single).
The reason for this is because the additional bonding electrons attract the nuclei more strongly and pull the atoms close together, shortening the bond length.

Shorter bonds are stronger. Single bonds are the longest and weakest whereas triple bonds are the shortest and strongest.

Remember that the size of the atom can also contribute to whether or not a bond is as strong as another, example HF vs HCl

Shorter Bonds are stronger since the & less reactive, so triple bonds would be the strongest. Longer bonds are weaker and are more likely to be involved in a reaction, so single bonds are the weakest.

It can be helpful to link what type of bond is shorter vs. longer. In other words, a triple bond is shorter than a double bond which is shorter than a single bond. We also know that a triple bond is stronger than a double bond which is stronger than a single bond. As such, you can figure that the shorter the bond is the stronger it is.

triple bonds are shorter than double which is shorter than single. then, the shorter the bond lengths are, the closer the electrons are being held together and therefore the stronger the bonds since more energy is needed to break the bond.

Shorter bonds are stronger. Double and triple bonds are shorter than single bonds, so these types of bonds are stronger.

Shorter bonds are stronger than longer bonds since short bonds involve more elctrons, this which causes the nuclei to be more attracted. Conversely, longer bonds don't make nuclei as strongly attracted and therefore result in them being easily broken.

The double and triple covalent bonds are stronger than the single bonds, as more electrons are shared. As a result, these bonds are shorter.

Shorter bonds are stronger than longer bonds. The strength for three types is triple bond>double bond>single bond, so the stronger bonds are shorter.

Shorter bonds are generally stronger, and longer bonds tend to be weaker.
