Re: Rules for n, l,m
I think that for quantum numbers what we need to know is that the Principle Quantum Number (n) solely determines the energy and size or shell that an electron is located in. The Angular Momentum Quantum Number (l) describes the shape. The allowed values of l range from anywhere from 0 to n-1. The Magnetic Quantum Number (ml) refers to the different orbitals of a subshell or the orientation. The allowed values of ml range from l to -l. Lastly, the Spin Magnetic Number (ms) refers to whether or not an electron is spin up or spin down. Thus, ms can only be +1/2 or -1/2.
Re: Rules for n, l,m
principle quantum # = n = energy & size (shell)
angular momentum = l = can be anything up to (n-1)
magnetic number = ml = orientation, -l....l
spin number = ms = -1/2 or +1/2

n is the energy level of the electron.
l is the number of subshells and describes the shape of the orbital, and can have the value of 0, 1,...(n-1).
ml describes the orientation of the orbital, and its values range from -l to l.
ms describes the direction of spin of the electron, and can be 1/2 or -1/2.

Re: Rules for n, l,m
Does l essentially just represent the block that is is in from the n value of being (n-1)? so like 0,1,2,3... is just s,d,p,f?

Re: Rules for n, l,m
n = shell= indicates row and the energy
l = subshell, relates to the shape, can be from n-1
ml = orientation = "s" is sphere etc
ms = electron spin= can be either -1/2 or + 1/2

I think the numbers that are important to know in regards to quantum are that n can be 0,1,2,3..., l can be 0,1,2,3...n-1, and ml can be -l,0,l.

N is the energy level (in discrete numbers)
l is the subshell that can be N-1 or less
Ml is the orientation and is from -l to l
Ms is the electron and is +/- 1/2
