Bond lengths

Why is it when there is a resonance structure, all of the bond lengths are the same even though there's double and single bonds.

The structure represents it that way because it is the best we can do, but in reality there aren’t actually double and single bonds like that.

Resonant compounds have more delocalized electrons, so they're kind of swooshing around the bonds all the time. The bond length we have is an average of what is measured.

In reality, the molecule is a resonance hybrid and is a combination of all of the resonance structures. This results in a bond length between a single and double bond since the bonds are defined as neither a single bond nor a double bond.

All the bond lengths are the same because in resonance structures the bond lengths are an average of every single bond leading them to all be the same length.

The bond lengths are the same value because the actual structure is a mixture of all the different versions of the resonance structure. Therefore, it isn't just one that has a double bond and the rest a single bond but all the bonds are a mixture of both, making the bond length in between the value of a double and single bond.

The electrons that are shared are delocalized meaning a specific single or double bond doesn't have full control of them. They are delocalized and the effect is spread among the entire structure. So a single bond has some double bond character while a double bond has single bond character. This is why all bonds are an intermediate length between the length of the single and double bond.

The bond lengths are all the same in the resonance structure because the structures all approximate the actual structure that is supposed to form. That is, the resonance structures are a mix of structures close to the actual structure.
