Photoelectric Effect Word Problems

Postby Megan Vu 1J » Mon Nov 04, 2019 2:22 pm

For the test, I am a bit confused on what the question is asking in regards to energy of photon, threshold energy, and kinetic energy. Do any of you have tricks on what the question is asking for in regards to electrons being emitted, etc? Sometimes, I get confused on whether it is asking for certain things about threshold or kinetic energy.

If it is asking about the threshold, it is usually the total kinetic energy of the incoming light minus the energy of the electron emitted, while kinetic energy it could be talking about the kinetic energy of the electron emitted, or the photon itself. If it is talking about the source, usually it will be talking about the light or photon while if it is talking about the kinetic energy of the electron, it is usually talking about the electron emitted. Always write out the equation (energy of electron emitted = energy of photon - threshold energy) and it should help!
