HW Question 2C5

Postby A Raab 1K » Tue Nov 05, 2019 10:43 pm

For a, draw the Lewis structure of (a) chlorine monoxide, ClO
I drew the molecule as
.. ..
O=Cl .
.. ..

Why isn't this correct?
The correct answer according to the answer key is
.. ..
:O - Cl .
.. ..
but I don't understand how this is correct, because the formal charges are not 0 for this answer, but are 0 in my answer.

I also struggled with this problem, and after searching it up, I believe your structure is the actual correct structure and that there is an error in the solutions manual, as using the formal charge of the elements would tell us that your structure is the lowest energy state of the molecule.

Chlorine monoxide is a radical so it's going to have instability
