Atomic vs molecular spectroscopy: outline 2

Postby Gabriella Bates 2L » Tue Nov 05, 2019 9:00 pm

On outline 2, the seventh bullet point says:

"With respect to electron transitions that give rise to a UV or visible spectrum: understand the difference between electronic transitions in atomic orbitals (atomic spectroscopy) and electronic transitions in molecular orbitals (molecular spectroscopy)."

What does this mean? Thanks in advance.

Electrons in atoms can be excited to higher atomic orbitals.
Electrons in molecules can be excited to higher molecular orbitals.

The energy difference for the above transitions typically occur in the visible and UV region.
