Which bond has more ionic character, C–F or C–Br? Why?

C-F (look at electronegativity difference)

Why isn't the electronegativity difference greater between C and Br since Br is farther away on the periodic table?

The trend for electronegativity is increasing upwards and to the right. Florine is thus the most electronegative element on the periodic table. Therefore, if you are ever comparing the ionic character of a single element (carbon for example) with various other elements, fluorine will thus have the greatest EN difference.

Fluorine is the most electronegative element because it is farther up and right on the periodic table. Therefore, C-F is more electronegative than C-Br.

As you go up and right electronegativity increases. Using this rule Florine is more electronegative than Bromine so the differences are
EN(F) - EN(C) versus EN(Br) - EN(C) since you know Florine's EN will be larger the difference between F and C is greater than C and Br. The more significant the electronegativity difference the more ionic character thus F-C has more ionic character.

Fluorine is the most electronegative element, and therefore the bond with F would be more ionic.

C and Br both have electronegativities on the lower side, while F has the highest electronegativity in the periodic table.
C(low) - Br (low) < C (low) - F (high)

fluorine is the most electronegative (increases towards right upper corner of periodic table) element making the C-F bond more ionic.
