Re: Bond Strength
Ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds in a vacuum. However, in water, covalent bonds tend to be stronger.

Re: Bond Strength
Ionic because the electronegativity difference between the two atoms in an ionic bond are usually greater than the electronegativity difference between atoms in covalent bonds.

Re: Bond Strength
Ionic bonds are stronger because the atoms have a greater difference in electronegativity than those in covalent bonds that form partial charges.

Re: Bond Strength
Since covalent bonds only have partial charges, ionic bonds are stronger due to larger differences in electronegativity.

Re: Bond Strength
Covalent bonds are stronger than ionic bonds in an organic system because in an aqueous environment, the positive end of water molecules would surround the anion of an ionic compound and the negative end of water molecules would surround the cation of the ionic compound. In a vacuum however, the covalent bond would be weaker than the ionic bond.

Re: Bond Strength
Ionic bonds are stronger than covalent bonds because of the larger difference in electronegativity.
Re: Bond Strength
Aside from looking at the electronegativity aspect, I think of it as how covalent bonds pretty much involve the sharing of electrons whereas ionic bonds involve the attractions of opposite charged ions which makes it much more harder to break.

Re: Bond Strength
If the ionic bond is in water, then the covalent bond is stronger. If it's out of water, then the ionic bond is stronger.
