CO, because the oxygen will give a lone pair of electrons to fulfill the octet of both atoms.

There is a coordinate covalent bond between NH3 and BF3. The bond between the nitrogen and boron is a coordinate covalent bond because both electrons come from the nitrogen atom.

What is the difference or what distinguishes a coordinate covalent bond from a regular bond?

Water is an example of a coordinate covalent bond, oxygen provides both electrons to the hydrogens.

In a coordinate covalent bond both electrons come from the same atom while in a regular bond each atom provides an electron.

Oh, got it! The only way you would know the type of bond (coordinate covalent vs regular covalent) is by drawing the lewis structures before and after the two atoms are bonded, correct?

Yes I believe so.

Coordinate covalent bonds also often happen when there are exceptions to the octet rule like for boron.

Do coordinate covalent bonds occur between atoms in one molecule or between two or more molecules?
