Does the shape that I draw the Lewis structure matter?
Like say I have C02, could i have the Oxygens sandwich the carbon, as well as one above, and one below the carbon?

Since we have not talked about shapes yet in lecture I would say you probably do not have to worry about the shapes of Lewis structures. Once we learn it then you will have to take shape into account.

Not for now, but we probably will have to take it into account when we learn about different shapes later!

Currently, I don't think that it does, as we have not gone over the shape part yet.

As of right now, shape of the Lewis structure doesn't matter. As we get further along in the quarter, it will matter.

It matters later in the chemistry 14 series but as of now, my peer learning facilitator said its fine as it is without drawing the shape.

but what if the shape determines the kind of interactions a molecule has with those surrounding it?

There’s a bunch of shapes that we’ll eventually learn about so yes it does matter but we don’t need to worry about it now!

As of right now, we don’t need to worry about it, but later I think Lavelle will let us know what is okay when dealing with shapes.

The simplest answer would be yes it matters. We'll be learning more about the correct way to draw them in the lectures.

I don't think it matters that much yet since we have not fully addressed shape, but I think this will change in the future.

Shape will probably matter when we go over that lecture, but right now it does not matter.

Re: Does the shape that I draw the Lewis structure matter?
As long as the electrons are correctly represented, the shape shouldn't matter for now.

Re: Does the shape that I draw the Lewis structure matter?
Lewis structures generally depict the structure of the molecule in relation to the lone pair electrons and types of bond. The model does not cover the actual structure of the molecule. Technically, the Lewis structure shapes don't have to be representative of the actual shape of the molecule.
