Boiling and Melting points

Postby ariaterango_1A » Tue Nov 12, 2019 2:56 pm

Do we need to memorize the boiling and melting points of each type of interaction? Also which interaction has the greatest energy and therefore has the highest melting and boiling point? Thank you!

I'm not certain but we probably just need to know why certain interactions have higher melting and boiling points than others and potentially be able to determine between two or more interactions which one would likely have the higher melting and/or boiling point.

I think it would be helpful to know generally which type of bond creates higher or lower boiling/melting points.

I don't think you need to know the specific boiling and melting points of each type of interaction but just know how the interaction affect the boiling and melting points and which ones might have higher or lower boiling and melting points.

The strongest interactions have the highest boiling point, which is the ion ion interaction.

You are not expected to memorize the boiling and melting points of substances, but you are expected to be able to determine the strength of the intermolecular forces between like molecules and tell which substances will have higher or lower boiling and melting points based on their strength.

I think we should just know between two molecules with different interactions, we should be able to dictate which molecule will have the higher boiling and melting point. Typically, it will be the molecule with the stronger interactions that will have higher boiling and melting points.

Why is the ion-ion interaction the strongest interaction?

I understand this statement but how will this be tested on test 2?
