Does anyone know the grading scale for final grades in this class?

I'm not really sure what you mean by grading scale, but based on his syllabus, the class is point based. We get a maximum of 5 points a week for chemistry community posts and homework submission. A maximum of 50 points for each test, 120 for the midterm, and 180 for the final. The maximum amount of points we can get is 500.

The class is graded on a straight scale out of 500 points ie if you get 465 points out of 500, you can get an A. Make sure to do the HW and post on chemistry community as those grades are good cushions to improve. Good luck! :)

Final grades are not assigned until the end of the quarter once the averages are determined. Just try to get as many points as possible throughout the course.

The class is based of points. The max points is 500. The first test was 50 points, the midterm was 120 points, the HW problems are 50 points, and then the rest is consituted by Chem Community participation, Test 2, and the Final. Your final grade will be determined by the amount of points you earned out of 500.

Hi Tyler!

I agree with all the previous replies. Additionally, there's a chance (but no guarantee) that Dr. Lavelle may curve grades if the class average is low. From what I hear, he would only curve up, meaning that it would raise your final grade. However, if the class average is above or at his expectations, your grades will be assigned based on how many points you earned out of the 500 possible. I hope this helps!

As today in class, Professor Lavelle stated he was pleased with the average of the midterm, I think its unlikely that he'll curve the class, but like the others said CHem community and homework are both good cushions

it says on the syllabus that 50% in the class is a C-, is this true?

I went to his office hours awhile back and that is what he said, however, that is only the bare minimum to pass. I believe you still have to get 450/500 points to get an A in the class.

For this midterm, I don't think he would curve, either.

As all the previous posts mentioned, he doesn't curve individual grades. However, if at the end the final average out of 500 points is lower than what he expects he may change the grading scale to match an acceptable class average. So a 93 isn't always an A and a 90 isn't always an A minus. However, the curve always helps.

Basically, he doesn't curve the test, but if the overall average is low, he might curve a little bit.

I know that grades aren't assigned after everything is in the grade book, meaning that he can curve the grades if the average is low.
