Re: Electron Density
Yes, I believe that lone pairs of electrons are considered regions of electron density since they influence the molecular shape. Please see the attached image.
Re: Electron Density
They are considered electron density and have an effect on shape. Dr. Lavelle mentioned that he was careful in his word choice because he wants us to know that shape is not only determined by bonds, but also the lone pairs.

Re: Electron Density
Yes lone pairs on central atoms are also regions of electron densities because they affect the molecular shape significantly. Lone pairs have strong repulsion that push bonds away.

Thank you so much! Do you think we are going to have to know all of the shapes?

Re: Electron Density
Yes, lone pairs are considered regions of electron density because they alter the molecular structure significantly. For example, a lone pair on a central atom can turn a trigonal planar into a trigonal pyramidal.

Re: Electron Density
Lone pairs are indeed regions of electron density as they alter the shapes of molecules

I think we are supposed to know all of the shapes we have covered in lecture- I recommend using flashcards to help study them!!

Re: Electron Density
Yes, and they can play a role in the shape of a molecule in changing the angles between atoms.
