Lewis Structures & VSEPR
Is it always necessary to draw the Lewis structure when using the VSEPR model? Or are there times when you don't really need it?
Re: Lewis Structures & VSEPR
I think drawing the Lewis structure out first is helpful when determining the VESPR model, but I don't know if it's necessary. However, on tests, they might expect us to draw it out.

Re: Lewis Structures & VSEPR
Drawing lewis structures help you determine whether there are lone pairs or not, which influences the VSEPR structure. Thus to be safe, always draw out the VSEPR first.

Re: Lewis Structures & VSEPR
The Lewis Structure can help you visualize the bonded pairs and the lone pairs so I personally believe it is very helpful to draw it out while using the VSEPR model. I think once you are familiar with the shape of a molecule, you wouldn't need to draw out the Lewis Structure.

Re: Lewis Structures & VSEPR
Drawing the Lewis structure can help you count up the total lone pairs and the total bonding pairs on a central atom which then correlates to the molecular shape and electron arrangement of a molecule. Remember, however, that you must be able to draw the most correct Lewis structure for this method to work.

I don't think it's necessary, but I think it can help you determine the VSEPR structure if there are lone pairs.

Re: Lewis Structures & VSEPR
Definitely not necessary. However, it can help you know how many lone pairs and bonded pairs there are, which is essential for VSEPR.

It's not necessary but it's always helpful so that you can see the locations of bonding electrons and lone pairs then use the VSEPR model and determine the structure.
Re: Lewis Structures & VSEPR
It is not totally necessary but can be helpful to determine the shape of the molecule.
