How to study for VSEPR?

How are you guys studying for VSEPR for Test 2? Just doing practice problems? Are there any good practice problems anybody can suggest :D Thanks

2.E has a lot of great practice VSEPR problems. Also, if you look up a chart with all of the shapes and bond angles listed, then you can test yourself on all the different molecular shapes and the corresponding bond angles.

For this the best approach is just study for it and memorize what bond angles goes with which shape. Personally if you know how to write the VSEPER formula of AXE for the molecules you can just remember that every molecule with the same formula will have the same shape and similiar bond angles.

It can help you visualize how the shapes are formed and how the presence of lone pairs can alter the geometry.

I think that visualizing the molecules in 3-D really helps, especially when you can't remember the names of the shapes.

I agree with all of the comments above. 2E has a lot of great practice, but if you want to do more, there should be a lot of other worksheets on Google. I think a good method to memorize the shapes and angles is to start with the VSEPR formula and overall shapes without taking into account lone pairs. All molecules with lone pairs will have angles slightly less than what their shape would be without lone pairs, and the VSEPR formula indicates the more accurate shape for all molecules.

I, personally, am making a chart with the format that Prof. Lavelle discussed in class (i.e. AXnEn), as well as the shape and the bond angles.

I agree that 2.E has a lot of great practice problems, but I am also checking out some worksheets on google and making notecards for each specific molecular geometry that includes:
- shape/name
- number of electron regions
- number of bonded & lone electron pairs
- bond angles
- VSEPR notation (AXnEn)

^ quizlet may also have study sets with this info!

In terms of studying for VSEPR for Test 2, just do as much practice problems as you can - the more the better. In terms of "good" practice problem suggestions, start by completing all the practice problems in the Molecular Shape and Structure unit outline (although only 5 are required for homework), then move on to more complex practice problems by either creating your own or finding practice problems online or through your TA. Try memorizing all of the VSEPR bond angles and shapes as well, just for good measure.
