Sigma bonds are formed by head to head overlapping orbitals, whereas pi bonds are formed by the lateral overlapping. Additionally, sigma bonds are stronger than pi bonds. Lastly, sigma bonds can be formed between both s and p orbitals whereas pi bonds are mostly formed between p and d orbitals.

Sigma bonds form between two atoms along the x-axis, and pi bonds form from p-orbital overlap and connect atoms along the y-axis. Sigma bonds are single bonds, pi bonds are the bonds that form after that.

Also, regardless of how many bonds you have, there can only be one sigma bond, but possibly multiple pi bonds depending on if its a double or triple bond.
