When drawing the Lewis structure for (S2O3)2-, does it matter which Lewis structure I draw? One structure consists of the central S atom with 3 double bonds attached to O and one single bond attached to S. The other structure is 2 double bonds between the central S atom and 2 O atoms, and 1 single bond between the central S atom and the terminal S atom and another single bond between S and an O atom. If I use one of these structures instead of the other, will there be any difference?

In terms of molecular shape, there would not be a difference because you'd have the same number of regions of electron density. Dr. Lavelle highlighted this in lecture when he was explaining why his non-ideal Lewis Structures were okay when doing VSEPR problems.

However, if the question ever mentions drawing the "most stable" Lewis Structure, it would matter because you'd want stable formal charges. VSEPR is just a situation where the types of bonds aren't as important as ensuring you have an accurate number of regions of electron density

2E.19, Part B

So if we do get a molecule like (CH3)2Be on the test or final, would we have to say it is tetrahedral about the carbon atoms, since there is not an exact shape we learned to accurately represent the whole molecule?
