Test 2 Topics

Postby GFolk_1D » Wed Nov 06, 2019 9:30 pm

Does anyone know if test 2 is cumulative or just the topics covered from the midterm to the test? Thanks!

My TA told me test 2 will just be from the material after the midterm.

Test 2 will cover what we went over in class in outline 2 but was excluded from the midterm + what we learn after the midterm up to the test

Test 2 should be in the week of Nov 18-22 (about two weeks from now) in your discussion section.

Test 2 will be during your discussion on week 8. I believe it should cover the rest of bonding and whatever we learn from then till week 8.

It should most likely include concepts pertaining to molecular shape and structure as well as those slides regarding dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonds, covalent bonds, and ionic bonds that were covered by Dr. Lavelle on the last slide on the Friday before the midterm exam.

The last topic we covered for the midterm was Topic 2D in the book. It's also posted on Dr. Lavelle's website under the announcements!

I missed lecture, on the friday after the midterm. Does anyone know what sections in text book cover the dipole-dipole interactions?

I believe it's section 3F in the textbook that goes over everything we'd need to know regarding intermolecular forces. That includes the dipole-dipole interactions.

I believe it's bonds, which bond has a greater angle between them, vsper, bond strengths, and shapes and structures

The topics we've covered so far since the midterm are VSEPR, bond angles, and intermolecular forces. We will also be tested on what we learn Monday which will include pi and sigma bonds along with other material.

Dr. Lavelle said the test will cover all material covered after the midterm up to the first slide shown in class on Monday, Nov. 18th.

Will we need to have the specific bond angles for each molecular shape memorized for Test 2?

Dr. Lavelle said we're not to memorize the specific bond angles. Only to know conceptually that lone pairs force bonding electrons closer together meaning bond angles are less than 109.5.

Only the slide on the types of bonds will be on test 2. Hybridization will not be on the test.

Basically whatever we learned barring hybridization that hasn't yet been on a test will be tested on the next one.

Test 2 covers all material since midterm up to and including the list below:
• Use the Valence-Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion Model (VSEPR) to determine the shape of
inorganic, organic, and small biological molecules, cations, and anions.
• Use bond dipole moments and shape to determine if a molecule is polar or non-polar.
• Use shape and polar or non-polar properties, identify different intermolecular
interactions/forces (H-bonding, dipole-dipole, dispersion).
• Explain why lone pairs are more likely to found in certain locations around a central atom
and how and why they affect the bond angles in a molecule, cation, or anion.
• Distinguish sigma and pi bonds by their shapes, properties, and component orbitals.

This was exactly what I need. Thanks!!
