Re: Polar or nonpolar
O2 is nonpolar because it is two of the same atom, there is no net dipole moment because both oxygens "pull" on electrons the same amount in opposite directions.

Re: Polar or nonpolar
O2 is nonpolar because there is no difference in electronegativity, and therefore, no dipole moment between the atoms.

Is CH2I2 polar or nonpolar? the lewis structure has the I atoms opposite from each other and the H atoms opposite from each other.

It is polar because there are two different atoms (H and I) attached to the central C atom. Even though they are opposite each other in the Lewis structure, the molecule is polar because I is far more electronegative than H, so the net dipoles will not cancel out. For a molecule like this to be polar, it must have all the same atoms are the central C atom.

Re: Polar or nonpolar
O2 would be considered nonpolar since the bonds are evenly distributed and cancel out, thus there is no net dipole. We can also say that because they have the same electronegativity, there is never an electronegativity difference between them, therefore it is nonpolar.
