Bond length

Postby PriscillaLi_3G » Mon Nov 18, 2019 11:46 am

So are bond lengths always the same for all molecules due to resonance?

There are all the same! The bond length for a resonance structure is the average of all the possible resonance structures.

Yes, they are. The bonds of a resonance structure are partial bonds so they are all the same length. The length is the average of the bond lengths of all the possible resonance structures.

Also keep in mind that bond length has an inversely proportional relationship with bond strength.

As bond length increases, bond strength decreases. (vice versa)
