I missed this lecture. What is a coordination compound and what is a ligand? I am so confused it all sounded so complicated and I had to miss lecture so I feel really behind.

A coordinate covalent bond is when one of the atoms provides both electrons for the bond.

A ligand is an electronically rich species and must have 1 or more lone pairs

A coordinate covalent bond is when one atom donates both electrons in a covalent bond.

A coordinate bond is one in which both shared electrons are provided by a single compound, as opposed to each atom/compound providing one electron to form a bond. The compound which binds to the transition metal by donating two electrons is known as the ligand.
