A σ bond is said to be "symmetric with respect to the internuclear axis", is the same true of a π bond ?

A sigma bond is symmetrical with no nodal planes with respect to the internuclear axis but a pi bond has a single nodal plane with respect to the internuclear axis.

I do not believe so because a sigma bond forms when two orbitals overlap end to end between the two atoms' nuclei which is the internuclear axis. On the other hand, pi bonds occur when the two orbitals overlap side by side, which is outside the sigma bond and the space between the nuclei (internuclear axis).
