Bent or Angular?

Postby Amy Xiao 1I » Mon Nov 18, 2019 10:54 pm

Is bent or angular the best term to use to describe a trigonal planar/tetrahedral with one lone pair? VSEPR charts online use the term "bent," but the textbook calls them "angular".

Technically they are the same thing so I don't think it matters, you would most likely get a problem correct with either name. Lavelle used bent in his lecture though.

Both are correct but Lavelle uses "bent".

The terms are interchangeable since they mean the same thing, just know what they are and you should be fine.

The two terms are synonymous, so you can use either one. :)

I would use bent since Lavelle uses that term more often.

They both refer to the same thing. It doesn't matter which one you use.

Bent and angular represent the same shape, so you should be able to use them interchangeably. I believe both are accepted on exams.

As long as you say either name and know that the bond angle is less than 120, you should be fine!

Does anyone have a video they think is a good reference for this topic?

I believe angular is 2 atoms bonded to the central atom with 1 lone pair, and bent is 2 atoms bonded to the central atom with 2 lone pairs.
