Order in Naming

When given the name of the compound, does it matter the order in which you formulate the atomic symbols?

For coordinate compounds, the order of the atomic symbols does matter. The ligand names would be in alphabetical order (either using their prefixes or the name of the element), followed by the name of the transition metal cation name.

I think the question was about going from the name of the coordination compound to the formula, not the other way around. If you are already given the name and asked to write the formula, there is technically no single correct way to order the formulae of the ligands as long as they are all after the atomic symbol for the central metal atom.

I think you have to write the atomic symbols of the ligands in alphabetical order, at least according to Toolbox 9C.1 in the textbook.

I agree, the names of the ligands still have to be in alphabetical order in the formula

will it be wrong if it isnt written alphabetically first?

The general rule is to put the atomic symbol in alphabetical order.

It would be the ligand name (alphabetically), then cation.

Could you clarify what you mean by "atomic symbol"?

Place the ligand names in alphabetical order and determine if the complex has a positive or negative charge to determine if you place it before or after a cation or an anion.

Put them in alphabetical order and then determine its charge.

You must put them in alphabetical order and then consider the charge.

first and foremost, place them in alphabetical order then find its charge
