Di-, Tri-, Tetra- vs Bis-, Tris-, Tetrakis-
When are bis-, tris-, tetrakis- used instead of di-, tri-, tetra-?

Re: Di-, Tri-, Tetra- vs Bis-, Tris-, Tetrakis-
They are used when the ligand has a prefix itself, so the ligand would have a di, tri, etc, so instead of saying didi, you would just say dis.

They are used if the ligand you are naming already has a name with di-, tri-, tetra-, tetra-

How do you know which is the ligand?

I believe that the ligands are the atoms that surround the transition metal.

Ligands are the ones within the coordination sphere of the central atom.

1) ligands first, then metal ion or atom
2) ligands are named in alphabetical order, disregarding their prefixes
Re: Di-, Tri-, Tetra- vs Bis-, Tris-, Tetrakis-
The prefixes bis-, tris-, and tetrakis- are used when a ligand already has a Greek prefix or the ligand is polydentate.

The prefixes bis-, tris-, and tetrakis- are used when a ligand already has a Greek prefix. It's either that or you use it when the ligand is polydentate.

You would also use the prefix if the ligand is polydentate, and there are more than one of the ligands (so no di-dien).

You would use them if the ligand already had a prefix of di-, tr-, etc.
