Ligands

Does the coordination number describe the ligand or the central atom of the ligands?

The coordintion number is correlation to the central metal atom as it speaks to how many ligands (or points of connection for bi/tridentate ligands) can connect to the central metal atom.

For example, a metal atom with four ligands attached would have a coordination number of 4. An atom with six ligands attached would have a coordination number of 6.

It describes the number of ligands attached to the central atom.

Can a ligand be a whole compound attached to a TM?

Yes, compounds may bond to transition metals and be ligands. Depending on the shape of the compound may be polydentate and bond to more than one ligand bonding cite.
