Chelating Ligands

Postby Alex Nguyen 3I » Sat Nov 14, 2015 4:13 pm

Chelating ligands have to be polydentate I think, but how can you tell if the polydentate ligand is chelating by just using the formula?

If you draw out the structure of the formula that is given and see that a ring has been formed with the ligand in it, then there is a chelating ligand.

Okay, but what I don't understand is when you draw out the structure of the formula how exactly do you tell a ring has been made with the ligand in it?
