You can tell by the location of the atoms on the periodic table. Be, Al, Ga, Sn, Pb, and Sb form amphoteric compounds. Anything to the left of them on the period table forms bases, and anything to the right forms acids.

Was this the diagonal line on the periodic table he was trying to explain in lecture?

Re: Amphoteric
If you look at Be, Al, Ga, Sn, Pb, and Sb they form a rough diagonal line on the periodic table

Yes it is!

Yes, by referencing the periodic table you can tell which compounds are amphoteric. Semi metals are typically amphoteric. Meaning that if they lay on the jagged diagonal line they are amphoteric.

In addition to this information. We can use the periodic table to determine which elements are solely acids and bases. Metals are typically bases while nonmetals are acids.

Re: Amphoteric
I just memorized which elements are amphoteric because the diagonal line is a bit skewed on the periodic table. However elements to the left of that general area are metals and form bases, while elements to the right are nonmetals and form acids.

Re: Amphoteric
Don't amphoteric compounds include those atoms from the periodic table that are just left of the metalloid diagonal line?
