Examples of amphoteric compounds
Are we responsible for memorizing the amphoteric compounds shown to us in class, or should we just understand their importance?

Re: Examples of amphoteric compounds
I'd say that it wouldn't hurt to memorize them because they follow along a pattern in the periodic table. It's a slightly skewed diagonal line of elements. Since Dr. Lavelle showed us exactly which ones are in class, then there's a chance that we might have to recall them in some manner for the final.

Re: Examples of amphoteric compounds
If I recall correctly, Lavelle said we would need to be able to identify the amphoteric compounds he showed us in class

i think Lavelle said to memorize the diagonal line of elements on the periodic table.

Re: Examples of amphoteric compounds
The diagonal band they are referring to includes Be, Al, Ga, Sn, Sb, and Pb. The examples Lavelle used in class were all bonded with oxygen, so BeO, Al2O3, Ga2O3, SnO2, SbO5, and PbO2
Re: Examples of amphoteric compounds
In addition to the diagonal band of amphoteric compounds, don't forget that H2O is amphoteric too!
