coordination number

Postby Jina Kwon » Fri Nov 29, 2019 1:15 am

Is coordination number based off the the number of lone pair of electrons?

I think the coordination number is based on the number of ligands bound to the transition metal. I'm guessing lone pairs may play a role in determining how many ligands can bind to the transition metal.

Coordination numbers are how many bonds (of ligands) attached to the central atom, I don't believe lone pairs count

I think it's just the ligands

The coordination number is based off of the number of points at which ligands are attached to the central metal atom of the complex.

Coordination number is basically the number of bonds the central atom has with ligands.

Coordination number corresponds to the number of electron density regions that are connected to the transition metal. There tends to be a max of 6.

Coordination number just refers to the total number of bound ligands in the coordination sphere.

Yes, it's just based off the number of bonds, not lone pairs.
