Sigma and Pi Bonds

Postby Matia Kim 1B » Fri Nov 30, 2018 3:09 pm

Does a triple bond have 1 sigma bond and two pi bonds? Or is it 2 sigma bonds or something totally different?

Yes a triple bond will have 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds.

So is the pi bond both the top and bottom electron areas? or are they both separate pi bonds?

I found this really helpful for visualizing the bonds! Thank you!

They are separate pi bonds. There are 2 pi bonds and 1 sigma bond in a triple bond.

a closer distance between the two atoms usually makes the sigma bond and bonds in general stronger. So the higher the attraction between 2 atoms, the stronger the sigma bond

All bonds have at least one sigma bond the other bonds are pi bonds.

A triple bond would have 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds.

there are never 2 sigma bonds connecting two atoms. always start with a sigma and then add pi bonds
