Amphiprotic

Postby Ayush Ray 1I » Tue Nov 12, 2019 12:52 pm

What does it mean for something to be amphiprotic? Also, what is the difference between amphiprotic and amphoteric?

Amphiprotic= a substance that can both accept and donate a proton (has characteristics of both an acid and a base)

amphiprotic vs. amphoteric:
-a substance is amphoteric when its reaction acts as an acid and as a base
-amphiprotic only applies to protic compounds

Yes, H20 is amphiprotic because it can can accept or donate a proton.

Does a Protic compound just mean it has an h bond? Or am I confusing it with something else.

An amphiprotic is a something that can both accept and donate a proton.

Is there a way to tell if something is amphiprotic?

Amphiprotic describes a molecule that can act as a proton donor and as a proton acceptor, such as water. Amphoteric describes a molecule that can react with both acids and bases.

Amphiprotic means that something can act as both a proton donor and proton acceptor. The example that Lavelle used in class was water, as it serves both functions in aqueous solutions

amphiprotic means it can act as either an acid or a base such as h20 which can be either a base that accepts a proton to form h30+ or an acid that donates a proton to become OH-. I believe in class that Lavelle said we would go over further examples on Wednesday. You can tell when something is amphiprotic because it could either accept or donate a proton

Would water be considered both amphiprotic and amphoteric?

What are protic compounds?
