NH3, acid or base?

Postby hannahdaijo_4H » Sat Dec 08, 2018 5:53 pm

With problems using ammonia, when would ammonia be a Bronsted acid versus a Bronsted base? Is it just a given that when NH3 reacts with water it acts as a base and becomes NH4-?

I think for almost all the reactions we've worked with, NH3 acts a Bronsted base because it accepts the proton.

Yes, in most cases in which we work with NH3, it is considered in the terms of bronsted base.

Ammonia is a weak base. It reacts with water to produce ammonium ions and hydroxide ions.

Ammonia is a base because the lone pair on the nitrogen gets donated to other acids that are in need of an electron pair.

In most cases Ammonia is considered a weak base

I believe that NH3 is a base, specifically a weak base.

NH3, or ammonia, is typically a weak base.

Ammonia is considered a Bronsted base because it loses its lone pair and accepts a proton to become NH4+.

With the problems using NH3, we consider it as a Bronsted base because typically it is a weak base

NH3 is usually a weak base since it accepts a proton to form NH4+.

A bronsted base accepts a proton and a bonsted donates a proton. Thus, NH3, in most reactions, is a bronsted base.
