The pH Scale
What do we need to know regarding the pH scale? Are there calculations or more conceptual types of problems?

Re: The pH Scale
We have only gone over the equation pH=-log(H+) and pH=-log(OH-) so I believe these are the only calculation (at least so far) that we will have to do regarding pH

Re: The pH Scale
I think all we need to know is pH<7 is considered to be an acid, pH>7 is considered to be a base, and pH=7 is considered neutral. Also, I think we should know how to find the pH of a solution given the concentration, and vice versa.

Additionally, I think it's good to know that pure water @ 25 degrees C is pH=7 (neutral) just for a reference on the test.
Re: The pH Scale
My TA discussed the different aspects of pH that I think would be useful to understand for the final
pH -log [H+]
pH -log[OH-]
Ka= acid dissociation constant
Kb= base dissociation constant
PKa= -logKa
Pkb= -logKb
Kw= Ka X Kb (H+ X OH-)
and that pH + pOH will always = 14
pH -log [H+]
pH -log[OH-]
Ka= acid dissociation constant
Kb= base dissociation constant
PKa= -logKa
Pkb= -logKb
Kw= Ka X Kb (H+ X OH-)

How do we find the pH of a solution given the concentration?

Re: The pH Scale
Know the how to calculate the pH ie -log() and pOH and know how to interpret results
