Strong vs Weak Acids and Bases

Postby JChen_2I » Fri Nov 29, 2019 10:43 pm

Is there a way to determine if an acid/base is strong or weak when only given their chemical formula?

The higher the electronegativity of the element, the stronger the acid is for binary acids. The more oxygens attached to a central atom, the stronger the acid is for oxoacids.

You can look at the bond length of the acid - longer bond length = more acidic. And you can also look at electronegativity difference in oxoacids = higher difference in electronegativity = more acidic.

Pretty much, the more ionic character a molecule has (EN difference, bond length), the stronger acid it is

There are only six strong acids, so I've always found it easiest to memorize them. They are: HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, HBr, HI, HClO3, and HClO3. Since they're strong acids, these six will completely ionize in water. Be sure to know all the other properties of these strong acids, too.

What properties do we have to know of the acids?
