Water as an acid and base

Postby TarynD_1I » Sun Dec 01, 2019 8:24 pm

How does water act as both a Bronsted acid and a base?

Water acts as a bronsted acid because it can donate a proton: H2O --> H+ + OH-. It acts as a base because it can also accept a proton:
H2O + H+ --> H3O+.

Water is amphoteric meaning it can react as an acid or base. While acting as a base it accepts a proton from an acid and becomes a hydronium ion. While acting as an acid, it donates a proton and then becomes a hydroxide ion.

Water can act as both a proton acceptor and a proton donator. It can both accept a proton and become a hydronium ion (thus acting as a base), and donate a proton and become a hydroxide ion (thus acting as an acid). Hope this helps!

Water can act as a Bronsted acid or base because it is capable of donating and accepting H+ ions. H20 can react to become H30+ when it accepts H+ or it can react to become OH- when it donates an H+ ion. Water is thus considered amphoteric because of this duality.

when we are talking about donating a proton, it's always in reference to hydrogen, correct?

Yes. It is in reference to hydrogen.

water is amphoteric, which means that it can either donate or accept protons
