Ligands
Exactly what is a ligand, and what do we need to know about ligands from lectures for the final?

Re: Ligands
In the context of what we have been learning, a ligand is a lewis base (e- pair donor)that attaches to a central ion (generally a transition metal) to form a coordination compound.

Re: Ligands
We also probably need to know how to name coordination compounds and to understand the concept of chelating ligands.

Re: Ligands
Ligands are found in coordination compounds, meaning they donate an electron pair to a central atom.

Re: Ligands
Ligands donate a whole electron pair to the central atom in a coordination compound. For instance, a lone pair in O2 contributes to the whole of a bond between O2 and Fe when it bends to Fe in a molecule like myoglobin.

Re: Ligands
A ligand is an ion or molecule that binds to a central atom to form a coordination compound by donating a pair of electrons to the acid.

Re: Ligands
All the ligands that are directly attached to the central metal atom are part of the coordination sphere.

Re: Ligands
A ligand is an ion or molecule that binds to a central metal atom in order to form a coordination complex. Essentially, it is an electron pair donor
