How can you tell if promotion is possible in an atom? How does it relate to hybridization?

Re: Promotion
A promotion occurs during hybridization when an atom needs to form a certain amount of bonds. For instance, carbon needs to bond 4 times. During hybiridzation we promote on electron in order to occupy space in an extra orbital.

Re: Promotion
So does promotion just refer to having an electron be at a higher electron state/bringing it to a higher orbital?

Re: Promotion
Yep, promotion means that an electron goes to a higher energy orbital. However, the orbital must be empty. So while carbon can promote an electron, nitrogen can’t (none of its p orbitals are empty).
I hope this helps!

Re: Promotion
Does anyone know how promotion figures into electron configuration and the bonding? Like is promotion different than just regular hybridization?
