Carbon Monoxide and Oxygen bound to hemoglobin?

Can someone explain why carbon monoxide is capable of binding stronger than O2 in the hemoglobin example that was talked about in Week 8's lecture?

The affinity of CO binding to hemoglobin is stronger than the affinity between O2 and hemoglobin.

Its essentially an irreversible process when CO binds to hemoglobin, whereas O2 isn't because it's affinity to bind to heme is much stronger than the O2 molecule.
