Acid Strength

Postby curry 1E » Wed Dec 04, 2019 10:45 pm

When determining the strength of acid between two compounds, do you first look at bond length or anion strength or both? This is in regards to question 6C.19. Thanks!

You would look at bond length first. If it’s the same then you look at the resulting anion’s stability (electronegativity, resonance...)

You would look at the bond strength. For part a, HCl has a weaker bond strength than HF, which means it is a stronger acid. However, for part b, you would base the strength of the acid on the amount of oxygen atoms. HClO2 has more O atoms than HClO, which is why it is the stronger acid.

Alkaline means that it is basic.

Would H3PO4 or HClO4 be the stronger acid in part D of 6C.19?
