can you tell if a compound is a chelate just by looking at it?

Not necessarily, you would have to look at the individual ligands and check if you have any bidentate, tridentate, or polydentate ligands. If you have ligands that are not monodentate and both the ligand binding sites are bonded with the transition metal central atom, then you have a chelate.

you can tell if a compound is chelating by looking at the ligands attached to the transition metal cation. If the ligands have multiple bonding sites (ie. ethylenediamine has two bonding sites), it will form a ring and therefore the compound is a chelate
