chemical equations of acids and bases

Postby Princess Jereza 3C » Sat Dec 07, 2019 6:12 pm

Is there a difference between using a single arrow or an equilibrium arrow in a chemical reaction between acids and bases? Does it all depend on the complete/incomplete deprotonation/protonation of hydrogen ions in a reaction? thanks

Hey! You use a reverse arrow when the reaction does not involve a strong acid or a strong base! When a strong acid or base is present, you use a single sided arrow because the acid/base dissociates basically completely.

a double sided arrow indicates a weaker acid or basethat doesn't dissociate completely. the single sided arrow represents the dissociation of a strong acid or base that dissociates completely.
