SO3 molecule as lewis acid

Postby Hannah_1G » Sat Dec 07, 2019 8:27 pm

The book draws SO3 (hw 6.5) with one double bond and two single bonds, but it is more unstable than SO3 having three double bonds. Does it have to do with SO3 acting as an acid or base?

SO3 with three double bonds is not stable. When you put three double bonds around it, you're giving S 6 bonds with 12 electrons in its outer shell. S does not have a d orbital so we cannot expand its octet.
