Lone pairs in hybridization

Postby zfinn » Fri Dec 06, 2019 3:22 pm

do lone pairs count towards the number of groups attached to the central atom? for example would so2 have 3 groups attached to the central atom? thanks!

lone pairs do count as a region of electron density

I was confused about this at first, but yes, lone pairs do count in hybridization.

I believe that it's electron geometry when lone pairs do not count. Please double check though!

Best of luck!

Yes. A lone pair is a region of electron density along with a bond

Yes, you count all regions of e- density when considering the orbitals of hybridization. Say an atom has 2 bonds and 1 lone pair, then the hybridization would be sp2.
