for ligands like diethylenediamine, if there were two dien, the name would be didiethylenediamine. Instead of repeating di twice, you replace it with the bis prefix.

These prefixes are used for polydentate ligand. For example, if there are two ethylenediamines, it would be bisethylenediamine.

You use these prefixes any time it is polydentate, so you would use it for oxalato, en, dien, and edta.

Also as a quick tip, I believe you write the polydentate in parenthesis when using the prefixes.

Another example would be two diethylenetriamine ligands (which are both tridentate). The prefix used would be bis-, resulting in bisdiethylenetriamine.

The prefixes -bis, -tris, and -tetrakis are added when the ligand already has a Greek prefix or if the complex is polydentate.
